Steve Flatow is an accomplished and innovative marketing leader of several high-profile sports organizations and a pioneer in the development of valuation methodologies used in the “partnership” approach to sports sponsorships. He formed SDF Management Group in 2013 to provide advisory and representation services to sports properties, products and projects, working with a wide range of companies including sponsors, licensees, traditional and digital media, promotional agencies, law firms, nonprofits and foundations, venues and municipalities.
Before SDF Management, Steve was Head of Marketing for Bloomberg Sports, a division of Bloomberg L.P. created to extend Bloomberg’s prodigious data management and analytics “backbone” into the rapidly-evolving sports data sector. The division’s first two products, “intelligent” management systems for fantasy baseball and football leagues and players, were Bloomberg’s first-ever consumer products.
Prior to Bloomberg, Steve served as Senior Vice President of Partnerships at NYC and Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnerships company. There, he developed innovative public/private partnerships with Coca-Cola, Snapple, AT&T, Google, Heineken and others, which generated substantial new revenues and supported important mayoral initiatives.
Earlier in his career, Steve was VP/Director of Marketing for the National Hockey League. During a period of eight years, he oversaw all of the League’s business units, including sponsorship, licensing, publishing, video, and youth development. He built and ran a new Events Division to develop and monetize the League’s premier events, and he was the creator of the League’s All-Star Weekend format, and Executive Director of the first four All-Star Weekends. Subsequently he served as Chief Marketing Officer of the Major Indoor Soccer League; where he oversaw all revenue and marketing functions, and then was Head of Business Development at the National Basketball Association for the Women’s National Basketball Association.
Steve began his career at Wilson Sporting Goods, owned at the time by PepsiCo, which was undergoing a conversion to a “product management” organizational structure. There, he became the product manager of the basketball, soccer and football businesses, with P&L responsibility for those three product lines and management responsibility for the company’s critically important partnerships with The National Basketball Association and the National Football League, as each League’s “official ball”. He also negotiated and won for Wilson two important new “official ball” partnerships with the North American Soccer League and the Women’s Basketball League.
Steve holds a BA from Cornell University and an MBA from the Booth Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago.
